You are guessing where the ball lands after each spin so luck plays a great part. Your game is against the croupier who represents the house (the casino). He is the one to spins the wheel and handle the bets/payouts. European and French roulette have 37 slot wheels with 36 numbers and a zero. American roulette has an extra slot, due to having two zeros.
How to Play
1) You bet on any number including the zero in the table layout or on the outside. When all players have placed their bets, the ball is launched.
2) You can still place bets while the ball is spinning, but you have to stop when you hear 'no more bets'.
3) The croupier places the marker on the winning place on the table, collects all losing bets and pays the winners.
4) You win when your bet is located on the winning number or near it.
The casino advantage A single zero roulette table has a 2.7% house advantage is 2.7%. This increases to 5.26% on a double zero table.
The 'En Prison' rule If the ball drops in the zero, some casinos allow you to recover half your bet or leave it (en prison = in prison) for another roulette spin. Should zero be the winning number the second time, you lose your whole bet.
The ' La Partage' rule The difference here (to 'en prison') is that you lose half your bet and cannot leave it 'en prison' for another spin.
The payouts A Straight-Up bet (on one number only) pays 35 to 1. (so you get 36, or 37 with no house advantage). In the USA it is 38 double zero roulette wheels. A two-number bet called split bet, pays 17 to 1. A three-number bet called street bet, pays 11 to 1. A four-number bet called corner bet, pays 8 to 1. A six-number bet pays 5 to 1. A bet on the outside dozen or column, pays 2 to 1. A bet on the outside even money bets, pays 1 to 1.
